Connecting to VPN in Linux

Installation Instructions

  1. In a web browser, log in to the Michigan Tech VPN page with your Michigan Tech account name and password.

  2. Click Standalone VPN ClientNOTE: This only works if your browser sets the User-Agent HTTP header to a string F5 expects. You can manually download it by going to <https://vpn.mtu.edu/public/share/BigIP_Edge_Clients/linux_sslvpn.tgz> after logging in.

  3. From a terminal perform the following:
    mkdir linux_sslvpn
    terminal window mkdir

    tar -xf linux_sslvpn.tgz --directory linux_sslvpn
    terminal window tar
    NOTE: You must have root privileges for this next part. This can be accomplished using sudo or su. 

    bash linux_sslvpn/Install.sh
    terminal window - bash

Usage Instructions 

NOTE: The VPN does not disconnect automatically upon logging out. If more than one person uses your machine, it is highly recommended that you disconnect when you are done using the VPN. Others who log in after you will be able to use your VPN connection if you fail to disconnect from the VPN.

Starting the VPN

f5fpc --start --host https://vpn.mtu.edu --user YOUR_ACCOUNTNAME -x
terminal window - start vpn
terminal window - start vpn 2

Stopping the VPN

f5fpc --stop

terminal window - stop VPN

Check the Status of the VPN

f5fpc –info
terminal window - check status of VPN
