Managing your Home Directory Quota

You may receive an email  that you are exceeding your home directory (H:\drive) quota.  In this case, you will want to check your current usage.  To manage your quota, please follow the instructions below.

  1. Please visit the StorageTools site at: https://storagetools.it.mtu.edu and sign in with your Michigan Tech username and password. If you are accessing this site from off campus, you will need to connect to the campus VPN first.  Please click here for instructions on how to connect to the campus VPN via Windows, Mac or Linux.

  2. Once you are logged in, you will see a "Self Service" section on the left side that has the two options listed below:

  3. To check your current H:\drive usage and quota allotment, select the Check My Home Directory Data Usage link and then select the Run Command button.

  4. After running the command, you should see something like the output below:

    Note: This indicates that my H:\drive quota is set at 20GB and I'm currently using 4.76GB.
  5. Once you've determined the usage of your H:\drive quota usage, you may need to identify files that need to be removed to get back below your set quota. To do this, select List Directories By Size in the Self Service section.

  6. To see a listing of directories in order of size, select the Run Command button, and you should see output similar to this:

  7. At this point, you can determine which directories are taking up the most space and make the necessary modifications to get back below your home directory quota.  

Why can't I delete any files from my account?

Typically there are two reasons why you cannot add or delete files from your home directory:

  • Your home directory permissions are incorrect.
  • You have exceeded your home directory hard quota, locking your account.

In either case please contact IT User Services at it-help@mtu.edu and our staff can assist you.

After either a permissions reset or bringing your network storage usage under quota, you will have access to add/modify/delete your files.
